CLAY + INDIGO :: SAT AUG 1ST, 11AM-3PM
I am excited to invite you to the very first (of hopefully many!) Community Cauldron Dye Party at BOLT!
Join me at BOLT Handmakers Society for a fun day of learning about dye vats, making and applying clay paste resist, and dipping everything into the beautiful Indigo dye!
Each participant will have one yard of undyed cotton fabric to experiment with. This will be cut into smaller pieces that will make great bandanas, patches, bags, or other embellishments for sewing projects. You are also welcome to bring small natural fiber items from home to dip into the indigo vat. Things like baby onsies, bandanas, hair wraps, etc. Please make sure they have been freshly washed before bringing them to dye! Cotton, hemp, silk, linen, and wool will all take the dye well.
In this workshop you will learn:
What goes into making and maintaining an Indigo vat
How to prepare your fabric
How to mix and apply clay paste resist
How to dye with Indigo
How to remove the clay resist and set your dye
Included in this workshop:
1 yard prewashed white cotton fabric for dyeing
clay paste resist and a variety of tools and brushes to apply it
access to the Indigo vat (aka the magic Community Cauldron!)
disposable gloves
4 hours of guided and hands on instruction from Erika
Please bring to the workshop:
wear clothes and shoes for getting messy, and bring a craft apron if you have one!
Any small natural fiber items that you'd like to dye (see ideas above)
A water bottle and snacks!
We will be outside to dye, so dress appropriately for sun and heat.
Everything else for your project will be provided!
This in-person event will take place at BOLT Handmakers Society located at 556 S. Vista Ave. Please arrive on time. You are welcome (and encouraged!) to bring a closed water bottle, drinks and snacks! There is a small kitchen with fridge available to use.
